The Link Between Memory Palaces and Other Mnemonic Systems
You’ve built your memory palaces, and you’ve seen how effective they are for storing information. Think of your Memory Palace as a high-performance engine—a powerful and reliable way to get from A to B. But to unlock its full potential, you need to fuel it with high-octane fuel.
Other mnemonic systems are that fuel.
The Memory Palace is the world’s greatest storage system, but it’s most powerful when combined with encoding systems designed to turn abstract information into memorable images. This guide will introduce you to two of the most effective encoding systems and show you how they supercharge your palaces.

Storage vs. Encoding: Understanding Your Toolkit
It’s helpful to think of mnemonics as having two parts:
- Storage System (The Palace): This is the structure where you put your memories. It answers the question, “Where does this information go?” Your memory palace is the ultimate storage system.
- Encoding System (Pegs, Major System): This is the tool you use to create your images, especially for abstract data like numbers. It answers the question, “What does this information look like?”
Combining a world-class storage system with a world-class encoding system is the key to advanced memory skills.
The Peg System: Creating a Mental Index
The Peg System is the simplest way to start encoding. It involves “pegging” information to a pre-memorized list of images. The most common is the Number-Rhyme system.
The Number-Rhyme Peg List:
- 1 = Sun ☀️
- 2 = Shoe 👟
- 3 = Tree 🌳
- 4 = Door 🚪
- 5 = Hive 🐝
- 6 = Sticks 🥢
- 7 = Heaven 😇
- 8 = Gate ⛩️
- 9 = Vine 🍇
- 10 = Hen 🐔
How It Works: To memorize a numbered list (e.g., a recipe or a checklist), you create a scene that links the item to its corresponding peg word. If the 2nd step in your recipe is “add sugar,” you would imagine pouring a bag of sugar into a giant Shoe (2).
The primary benefit is random access. Unlike a palace journey, which you have to walk in order, the Peg System allows you to instantly recall the 8th item by simply thinking of your image for “Gate” (8).
The Major System: The Ultimate Code for Numbers
For longer numbers, the Peg System isn’t enough. The gold standard used by memory athletes is the Major System. It is a simple but powerful method for converting numbers into words.
The Concept: It’s a phonetic code that assigns a consonant sound to each digit from 0 to 9. You take a number, find its sounds, and then add vowels (which are “free” and have no value) to create a concrete word you can visualize.
The Phonetic Code:
- 0 = s, z
- 1 = t, d
- 2 = n
- 3 = m
- 4 = r
- 5 = l
- 6 = j, sh, ch
- 7 = k, g
- 8 = f, v
- 9 = p, b
Example: The number 95.
- The sounds are p/b and l.
- By adding vowels, you can form words like: PooL, BaLL, BeLL, or PiLe.
- You choose the most visual word for you (e.g., BALL) and now have a concrete image for the abstract number 95.
The Ultimate Synergy: Major System Images in a Memory Palace
This is where everything comes together. You use the Major System to encode the information, and the Memory Palace to store it.
The Process: Memorizing a long number like Pi (3.1415926)
- Group the digits: Group them into 3-digit chunks: 314, 159, 26.
- Encode with the Major System:
314->m-d-r-> MeTeoR159->t-l-p-> TuLiP26->n-sh-> NoSe HaiR (humor helps!)
- Place in Your Palace:
- Locus 1: A fiery MeTeoR crashes into your front door.
- Locus 2: A giant, beautiful TuLiP is growing out of your hallway floor.
- Locus 3: Your favorite painting is ruined because it has grown long, flowing NoSe HaiR.
You have now stored the first seven decimal places of Pi as a simple, three-stop journey. This is the exact method used to achieve superhuman feats of memory.
